Teacher Lauren Shenk was awarded a grant to support LIC’s One Book, One School (OBOS) initiative to facilitate a community of readers. Each of the 560 LIC students, as well as all staff members, received a copy of Rump: The (Fairly) True Tale of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff. The funding from the grant also helped provide some materials for LIC’s kick-off assembly, which introduced the book to the school. To help keep students engaged, the LIC had daily reading and trivia questions about the book and each classroom participated in a door decorating contest.
OBOS culminated with a Family Night to celebrate the book. Rump-themed stations included weaving, obstacle courses, temporary tattoos, friendship bracelets, a magician, a photo booth, and a sludge snack station!
Ms. Shenk shared, “This grant has been so helpful in creating a way to get the whole school community involved in reading.”
